Identity

  1. A common name in the Arab kingdoms of Nabatea and Palmyra. Possibly an Arab slave of Caiaphas?
  2. As assistant to the most powerful (Jewish) man in Israel, Malchus occupied a position of respect.
  3. Walked at the front of the guards, given his close connection to the high priest.
  4. Speculation: M. may have been Caiaphas' "ear" in Jerusalem. (C. would have had many enemies.)
  5. May have been the one with whom Judas had made the betrayal arrangements.
  6. His relative identified Peter as his attacker (John 18:26).
